CSC’s data centers are located at the Renforsin Ranta business park in Kajaani Northern Finland. After thorough site selection process Kajaani was selected to locate the next national supercomputers. First CSC’s data center started operations in 2012. Stable geographic and political environment guarantees secure and long-standing operations.

Kajaani site has served power intensive industry and has been transformed to green HPC data center park. Site has own industrial electrical network with Fingrid electrical substation over 900 MW of total capacity. Kajaani is surrounded by fossil free energy production, closest hydro power plants are within 5 km and Finland’s biggest wind farm is being built in the surroundings with more wind parks to come in the near future. Built in medium voltage transformer capacity over 200 MW and option for excess heat utilization to Kajaani district heat network makes the site’s TCO among the lowest in the Nordics.

Connectivity wise Kajaani is perfectly located on the route for Arctic Connect North East passage and Cinia C-Lion connectivity. CSC is connected to Funet 100G backbone network and at the same time to NORDUnet and GÉANT. Besides research networks Renforsin Ranta business park is well connected to commercial connectivity operators.

“Proof of concept 10 MW HPC project LUMI” will be globally TOP-5 supercomputer and operating with carbon negative footprint, thanks to excess heat utilization. LUMI is one of three Euro HPC supercomputers serving LUMI consortium countries and Euro HPC JU. CSC’s LUMI reference architecture can be modified and built according to customer specifications.

Next to LUMI is expansion space for two individual 10 MW data centers. The actual business park area has free space for over 100 000 m2 or option to build new facilities. For those who want a fresh start you can start developing your own 200 hectares greenfield area.

CSC offers HPC colocation services or turnkey data center projects were CSC takes the project lead responsibility and gathers local data center ecosystem to support the project.
