Plans pre-approved by all authorities

Notes on site topography

The Campus site is flat, solid rock and at least +5 m above sea level (minimum recommendation in the area is +3,14 m). The second image is the elevation model in Mussalo (from NLS, National Land Survey of Finland). DC site area has been excavated after the current elevation model laser scan was completed.

Prevailing wind directions

Prevailing wind is SW, which is typical on the shores of Gulf of Finland.

Natural water source available for cooling

Available

If yes, distance to water source / [meters]

400

Notes on cooling options

Several different cooling options:

  • Direct air cooling
    • Ambient air conditions favor direct air cooling
    • With adiabatic cooling white space temperature does not exceed 25 °C
  • Cooling towers
    • High stability due to low ambient wet bulb temperature
    • Makeup water available from several sources
  • Sea water cooling
    • Very high stability and efficiency
    • Cost-effective especially in larger scale

Detailed plans for all cooling options available.

Type of ground

Solid rock / moraine. Plot will be leveled by the owner (City of Kotka).

Levelling of plot

Plot is partly construction ready / levelled

Natural risks

No danger for flooding.

  • A publication by Finnish Meteorological Institute; “Long-term flooding risks and recommendations for minimum building elevations on the Finnish coast”, June 2014. The minimum recommended building elevations are based on the sea level in 2100 with an exceedance frequency of one event per 250 years. Minimum recommended building elevation without wave compensation in Mussalo is 314 cm above sea level (calculated by linear interpolation from Helsinki and Hamina mareograph data). The estimated minimum plot level will be + 500 cm above sea level.

Finland has solid ground, no natural disasters

  • Southern Finland locates in very peacuful area concerning earthquakes. There have been some earthquakes also in Kotka - Hamina area as everywhere else on earth, but their size have been small and duration very short. Local earthquakes are part of earthquake serie where Eurasian tectonic plate pushes under other tectonic plate. Due to the fact that there have been only minor earthquakes, they are not needed to take account in any building regulations or orders. (Source: University of Helsinki, Institute of Seismology)
