AI is shaping the future — but in Finland, it’s already transforming business. So, what makes Finland a global leader in AI innovation?
"Finland has a strong tradition and lot of skills in research, and we have invested in the infrastructure for a long time, says Timo Sorsa, Head of GenAI at Business Finland."
"Second strength is Finland’s high level of digital readiness. As a society, both in infrastructure and practical skills, Finland ranks at the top globally."
Third strength is high-quality data.
"Thanks to public sector initiatives, we have exceptionally high-quality data, especially in healthcare. This data plays a critical role in AI innovation, especially in areas such as health tech."
Finland’s ecosystem empowers AI startups
For startups, Finland has even more to offer. Public funding, for example from Business Finland, and private venture capital are both available.
Active networks, such as AI Finland, bring companies together across sectors. Large Finnish corporations, such as Kone and Nokia, have all embraced AI as a key part of their operations, creating partnership opportunities for startups.
Networking is easy, as hierarchies are low and the culture values collaboration.
"Finland is a small country, where everyone knows everyone. This makes it easy to connect with the right people. It builds trust, Sorsa says."
No wonder global AI leaders are investing in Finland. The Ellis Institute is building a pan-European hub for machine learning research, while FCAI—a joint effort by top universities and VTT—drives cutting-edge AI development. Tech giant AMD has tapped into Finnish AI talent, acquiring a local firm (SILO AI) for their expertise.
With world-class infrastructure like the Lumi supercomputer and the new AI Factory, startups here have everything they need to thrive.
Career opportunities at the forefront of AI
In her 18 years in Finland, Sofiya Utge has learned what makes Finnish tech industry so special. This small-town girl from India has led innovation in some of the biggest companies in Finland, and she currently works at Kone as a Product Owner, developing the adoption of AI powered low code solutions for improving productivity at work.
"My work has an innovative mindset, focusing on collaboration and productivity. Our ambition is to make sure these tools are available for everyone to make work life easy, Utge says."
Finland may be a small country, but when it comes to technology, it’s at the forefront - especially in AI.
"What surprised me the most is how powerful Finland is culturally and in technology. AI is heavily promoted, especially ethical and sustainable AI, which is great for inspiring startups. Slush event in Finland sets the best example, where many startups were already coming with AI."
Utge believes Finland understands the change AI is bringing better than many other countries. The approach to AI is inclusive, and there’s a national strategy behind it.
"My 13-year-old son is already learning about AI at school — how to use it ethically, what the guidelines are, and how to apply it creatively. Finland offers opportunity for everyone to learn and develop AI skills, there are plenty of courses available for free in universities and online."
Finland offers perfect conditions for tech success
Utge believes the Finnish mentality and culture help tech industry and businesses thrive. There’s stability and transparency, and Finland’s low hierarchy has been a welcome cultural shift.
"Finland is a fantastic country if you’re looking for honest and trustworthy people, Utge says."
"You are measured by your work and outcome, not your position. There’s no competitive culture, no bragging. Everyone is treated equally."
Beyond her day-to-day job, Utge participates in community events and mentorship programs, and volunteers in women-in-tech and AI initiatives.
There’s time for it all, as Finland offers unbeatable work-life balance.
That’s why for Sofiya Utge and her family, Finland has become home.
"I see my future deeply rooted here and want to continue to build and give back to the society."
